Ghanaian traditional meets Australian contemporary improvised music. Having spent time studying with master drummers in Ghana, Finn Milne’s project “Chale Wote” connects the next generation of Australian improvising musicians with Ghanaian musicians based in Naarm/Melbourne.
At the heart of each composition are rhythms originating from across Ghana, with harmony and melody influenced by Finn’s study of jazz and improvisational music.
Chale wote means friend let’s go in the Ga language, it is also the word for thongs and the name of a festival held during the Homowo celebrations in Ghana. This project encourages engagement with the diverse African performing arts scene in Australia and celebrates the deep traditions of Ghanaian music.
Finn Milne – keys, Abli Laryea – percussion, Quaye Seth – percussion, Quinn Knight – drums, Lily Appelt – bass, Flora Carbo – sax, Kyle Muir – guitar.
