Clara Darcy approaches folk music with the same manner she approaches most things: a sense of grave responsibility and entirely misguided conception of herself as a culturally relevant figure. April May, of actual local relevance (Walking To The Grocery Store), picks an acoustic guitar as a refuge from her punk-rock day job. Their collaboration, started late last year, is dynamic and earnest, weaving together influences from the folk revivalist harmonies of Welch/Rawlings and Big Thief to the high-conceptual songwriting of Ethel Cain.
Wednesday 28th February at the Bergy will be Clara and April’s second joint appearance on stage, debuting some new songs while revisiting familiar tunes with new instrumentation (courtesy of violinist Stephanie Sheahan). They are supported by two exciting local bands: Starseeds (recent single ‘New Desire’) and Babchia (upcoming EP), who have promised to supply rhythm and sensuality to spite the austerity of the headliners!
So let this evening supply a paragraph for your coffee table book about the interpersonal dynamics of Melbourne-based transsexual pop pariahs between the years of 2022 and 2027. It is a restatement of our values to ourselves.
