Panic Room (MA 15+, 2002) Presented in 35mm Film by The Revival House Perth

Recently divorced Meg Altman (Jodie Foster) and her diabetic teenage daughter Sarah (Kristen Stewart) move into a spacious New York brownstone equipped with a fortified panic room, designed as an impenetrable safe haven in case of emergency. On their very first night in the house, three intruders break in searching for a hidden fortune concealed somewhere within the property, forcing Meg and Sarah to barricade themselves inside the panic room for safety. As the desperate burglars realise the very thing they're searching for lies inside the room where their targets are hiding, a tense standoff ensues, with Meg forced to draw on unexpected resourcefulness and courage to protect her daughter from increasingly dangerous intruders while trapped in the one place meant to keep them safe.

Director David Fincher crafts a taut, technically dazzling thriller that transforms a claustrophobic single-location premise into a masterclass in sustained tension. Jodie Foster delivers a commanding performance as a mother forced into unexpected physical and psychological resourcefulness, while the film's trio of intruders, played by Forest Whitaker, Jared Leto, and Dwight Yoakam, bring distinct, conflicting motivations that complicate the film's cat-and-mouse dynamics. Fincher's virtuosic camerawork, employing elaborate, seemingly impossible tracking shots that glide through the house's walls and floors, creates a hyper-controlled visual style that heightens the film's mounting dread. Conrad W. Hall and Darius Khondji's cinematography renders the brownstone's shadowy interiors with oppressive atmosphere, resulting in a genre thriller elevated by genuine directorial craft and sustained, nerve-shredding tension.
