Bradley McCarthy Trio
Bradley McCarthy is a forceful and deeply soulful jazz saxophonist whose sound has been forged over two decades on Australia’s stages. A veteran of the national jazz circuit, McCarthy has lit up festivals including the Brisbane International Jazz Festival, Stonnington Jazz Festival, Manly Jazz Festival and Noosa Jazz Festival, earning a reputation for high-octane performances that hit hard and swing deep.
Rooted in the legacy of alto saxophone titans like Cannonball Adderley and Kenny Garrett, McCarthy’s playing balances raw intensity with lyrical fire. After studying at the Queensland Conservatorium, he became a prominent voice in the Brisbane scene before moving south to complete an honours year at the Victorian College of the Arts. Along the way, he’s shared the bandstand with Australian jazz heavyweights including James Morrison, Bernie McGann, Dale Barlow, Jamie Oehlers, Juliane Wilson and Phil Rex.
In 2006, McCarthy received a Buzz Grant to record his quartet, presenting original compositions inspired by modern jazz masters such as Chris Potter, Kenny Garrett and Branford Marsalis. More recently, he assembled ‘Cannon Fodder’, a hard-swinging quintet featuring some of Brisbane’s finest young jazz musicians, dedicated to the music of Cannonball Adderley. The result is infectious, groove-driven jazz that gets feet tapping and spirits lifted.
