Ross Nixon is an internationally renowned jazz pianist and composer who has been performing and creating for over 30 years. He has performed extensively overseas and throughout Australia. He has performed at Kyoto Jazz Fest, Cork Jazz Festival, Fort Lauderdale Jazz Fest, Barcelona Jazz Festival along with many others; he has toured through the Tokyo jazz circuit, played at many jazz clubs including in Melbourne, New York, Hong Kong, the Bass Note in London etc and spent many years playing in residencies at the Ritz Carlton Osaka, Japan, the Sheraton Miyasaki, Japan and Abu Dhabi Sheraton. Over the span of his career, he has had the opportunity to play and record with many incredible musicians and singers including Melanie Charles, Denise King, Curtis Lundy, Victor Lewis, Bernie McGann and has supported artists such as Vince Jones and James Morrison.
2017 saw him record an album in New York with bassist Curtis Lundy and legendary drummer Victor Lewis. The album, ‘The Removalist’ showcases Ross’ love of the acoustic trio format and features original material along with sleek interpretations of classic jazz standards. Ross’ love of the jazz greats like Oscar Peterson, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, and Bill Evans shines through in his playing as he artfully interprets jazz, R & B, funk and Latin classics and creates heartfelt and musically sophisticated arrangements. Ross’ performances take you on an exciting journey as he improvises and creates on the spot, taking the music to new places and building anticipation of where you might end up.
Ross’ jazz trio includes bassist Peter Walters and drummer Trent Bryson-Dean. These three individuals have extensive experience and are some of Australia’s most gifted ‘first-call’ musicians. The Ross Nixon Trio’s blend of brilliant musicianship, creativity, feel and improvisation continues to impress audiences wherever they play.
Coming to The Jazz Sessions on Thurs 17th April, the Ross Nixon Trio will be joined by vocalist Kristina Kelman. Kristina has been gracing Australian stages for nearly 30 years and has toured internationally with jazz vocal ensemble SCAT before appearing with some of Brisbane’s best blues, jazz and funk bands. Her love of the swing era has seen her perform with various big bands and she has worked with many big names in the Australian music scene.
