Grace Robinson "Choppy" Album Launch
Following performances at Wonder Mountain and Brunswick Music Festival, and a sold-out single launch at The Gem, Naarm-based singer-songwriter Grace Robinson is bringing her debut album choppy to Shotkickers on Friday December 4th for a full-band launch show, joined by Indigo King and Elena Jones.
Grace Robinson has been in character her whole life: youngest female booking agent in the country, electro-soul queen of Empress, choir director of Northside Musicians Choir and Guuranda, the first Aboriginal-language opera. She’s worn every hat except her own. Now, with the release of her debut solo album choppy on November 13th via AWAL and Impressed Recordings, Grace is finally stepping into the spotlight as herself, with a shiny new 12 inch record to go along with it.
Recorded with ARIA-winning engineer Alex Gorman (Angie McMahon) and producer Marcus Paquin (Arcade Fire, The National, Julia Jacklin), choppy is both a return to herself and a coming-of-age record about figuring out who the hell she is. Named after her childhood nickname (thanks to her chubby cheeks), the album traces her journey through anxiety, family, pressure, neurodivergence, grief and the messy business of growing up. It’s an undeniable reintroduction to an established artist, laden with Julia Jacklin ache and Sharon Van Etten swagger, with big vocals, big stories and choruses built for crowds to scream like it’s their diary too.
Grace is already a familiar face across the Australian music scene. Her debut singles harder than you think and is it over? both received triple j and triple j Unearthed rotation in their first weeks, alongside features on ABC Rage and praise from Frankie Magazine, Ramona, The AU Review, Beat Magazine, Atwood Magazine and KEXP in the USA.
As a live performer, Grace has played stages far beyond the usual emerging-artist circuit, selling out headline shows and sharing stages with Middle Kids, Ruby Gill and TOPS (CA), while appearing at Dark Mofo, PANAMA, Brunswick Music Festival, Strawberry Fields, Wonder Mountain and Queenscliff Music Festival, among others. Her career began long before her solo debut: at nineteen, she was co-writing on an ARIA-nominated album as a jazz singer, and she has since built a career spanning performance, songwriting, artist management and booking.
When she’s not pouring every cell in her body into a performance, Grace is working behind the scenes at WAT Artists, booking tours for artists including Ruby Gill, Hannah Cameron, Immy Owusu and Allysha Joy, and programming stages across Australia's festival circuit. Despite spending years helping other artists build their careers, choppy marks a different kind of milestone: a coming of age record made in her 26th year of life.
On December 4th, Grace brings that record to Shotkickers for a full-band celebration of choppy, joined by Indigo King and Elena Jones. After a lifetime of playing every role but her own, it’s finally Grace Robinson’s turn.
