Time/space-shifting master Ariel Kalma teams up with Primitive Motion for a special evening of collaborative and solo explorations in the intimate surrounds of the Junk Bar’s Skukum Lounge.

Ariel Kalma has been exploring the outer fringes of time-dissolving sacred music since the early 1970s, when he developed his signature sound universe of “electronic ragas”. To this day his work has a timeless transcendence, floating saxophone notes, flute melodies, spoken word, field recordings and keyboard patterns into clouds of looped harmonic puff.

After developing his own primitive delay system of linked Revox reel to reel tape machines in the early 70s, Ariel worked as a technician at the famous INA-GRM studio in Paris, and commenced self-releasing records of minimalist beauty. Influenced by his early travels to India, he has pursued his sound world trajectory for over 40 years, actively releasing meditational and exploratory works from his home base in northern New South Wales.

In 2014, US label RVNG Int’l released a stunning survey of Ariel’s early recordings An Evolutionary Music (Original Recordings:1972-1979) that places his work in a legacy of sound explorers that includes minimal master Terry Riley et al.

For his first ever performance in Brisbane, Ariel teams up with local dream-float duo Primitive Motion, who over the course of four albums in recent years have created their own world of blissful echo-drenched pop music and deep space hymns. PM’s previous sold-out shows at the Junk Bar have proven special occasions, and this event promises to deliver more of the same!
