In the early 2000’s The Hiptones were a major force on the national roots and blues scene. The word was well and truly out that if you wanted to be guaranteed a wild night out, go see The Hiptones
Like all great bands, they were an organic creation much greater than the sum of their parts, with an eclectic group of musicians coming together from the roots music scene in Adelaide.
The Hiptones sound is a gumbo of the roots music with a pop sensibility. With a canny laid-back fusion of soul, funk, blues and gospel, they distilled the best elements of the New Orleans, Memphis and Chicago rhythm & blues tradition, and at the time, gave a massive shot of adrenaline to the Australian roots scene. Why? Because while there are lots of bands that have their roots in the blues, there are few with a singer as good as Snooks La Vie. Less with a band that can entertain a crowd in a bar for five hours straight and even fewer that can write songs as good as the blues and soul classics that inspired them.
The Hiptones was a roots band that played with a unique style of their own and their debut album Right Now was particularly special given that it brought the band to the attention of a major label to which they were subsequently signed. Ultimately, The Hiptones were nominated for APRA Best Blues and Roots song of the year (2008) and narrowly lost to the John Butler Trio.
This February, the band is reforming for one night only. The quartet performing are renowned for consistently going all out to play to a room full of people keen to forget the week’s work and grind and dance to music that speaks to the mind and the body.
Out front will be Snooks, soul and blues singer with an incredibly powerful voice. Brother T will be driving the bass and Hammond organ deftly bridging the gap between retro funk and new soul. Nick Kipridis will be laying down sublime guitar in the feel of guitar blues legends, also being able to provide that Atlantic R&B funk attack and Miguel on the skins, will be in the engine room, doing it all. Don’t miss this. Tell everybody!
"Does the world really need another Soul band? The answer is "YES!" but it's gotta be THE HIPTONES!" - James Black ‘RocKwiz’ Orchestra, Mondo Rock, Black Sorrows
"The Hiptones cool grooves & beautifully understated playing - this is blues for the masses & a great leap forward for the oz blues scene." - Ross Wilson, Mondo Rock Daddy Cool
"Not only are their aims true, but they give the much needed 'nod' to all the great 'old school' R&B that has come before... - they're formidable." - Renee Geyer
