If you can imagine Lou Reed with the deft satire of Barry Humphries and the grunt of the Ramones you’ll get an idea of a Dave Warner’s from the Suburbs performance.  Now Bicton boy Warner is returning to his original suburban turf – The Leopold Hotel on Sat October 21.

Just a stone’s through from Old Stock Rd, which Dave etched into rock history by his song of the same name , this is your chance to release your Convict Streak and yell yourself hoarse during Warner’s profane, inspired Half Time At The Football.  Dave will be performing classic Suburbs material plus songs from the new album WHEN with the help of Tony Durant, Bill Beare, Lloyd Gyi, Phil Bailey and wife Nicole.

A little bit of Suburban history for the uninitiated: Dave Warner formed what was probably Australia’s first “punk” band Pus back in 1972, rehearsing in the garages of Bicton and Melville. In 75 he left for London where he honed his music into what he was to later term “Suburban Rock”. He returned to Australia and in late 1976 launched Dave Warner’s from the Suburbs with instant success in the single Suburban Boy and album Mugs Game.

On his Rolling Thunder tour, Bob Dylan used to play Warner’s unlabelled live bootleg tapes in his bus and declared Warner along with Richard Clapton as his favourite Australian artists. Other Warner fans included The Stranglers and the legendary Kim Fowley.

In 1980 after four albums Dave Warner stopped playing music full time and turned his attention to other forms of writing including plays, film, television and books.  His debut crime novel City of Light won the WA Premier’s Award for best literature in 1996 and in 2016 his novel Before It Breaks won the prestigious Ned Kelly Award for Australian Crime Writing.  This October marks the publication of his latest crime effort Clear To The Horizon.   The power of his music however, never left and 2017 has marked the return of Dave to recording with the release of his critically acclaimed album WHEN.

WHEN features two original Suburbs Tony Durant and John Dennison as well as a host of luminaries of the Australian scene. Greg Macainsh (Skyhooks) Martin Cilia (Atlantics) – who produced WHEN, and Lloyd Gyi have all played with Dave for thirty odd years but added to the mix are Greedy Smith (Mentals) Jim Moginie (Midnight Oil) Kevin Borich, David Briggs (LRB) Mick Thomas and Mark Wallace (Weddings).  Dave’s wife Nicole, Dick Haynes (Loaded Dice) James Gillard and Bill Beare (Fingerprints) form the basis of an amazing vocal ensemble.

Bicton has a place in Australian rock history so come celebrate it with Dave and the Suburbs Sat Oct 21.
