New York singer-songwriter Margaret Glaspy has announced she will be heading down under for the first time in March, to wow Australian audiences with her profound songs, distinctive vocals and snarling electric guitar.

Glaspy will traverse the East Coast on her debut Australian visit, with intimate headline shows at Brisbane’s The Foundry on Saturday 4th March, Sydney’s Newtown Social Club on Monday 6th March and Melbourne’s Northcote Social Club on Wednesday 8th March. Tickets are on sale now.

Glaspy was today announced to play A Festival Called Panama, adding to her already announced performance at Golden Plains. She will also make a special appearance alongside Martha Wainwright at the Melbourne Zoo Twilights series in March.

Emotions and Math (ATO Records), Glaspy’s debut album, earned a triple j Feature on release earlier this year, with the album’s title track along with the refreshingly honest ‘You and I’ becoming staples across the national broadcaster. 27-year old Glaspy self-produced the release, which frames her revealing ruminations in shards of jagged guitar rock across twelve tracks. Building on its early buzz - Rolling Stone hailed ‘You and I’ for its “hot barbs of electric guitar”, and BrooklynVegan declared it a “stomping rocker with a DGAF attitude” - Glaspy has enjoyed a mammoth 2016 so far.

After cutting her teeth in New York and Boston, where she was a touring musician and played in other people’s bands, Emotions and Math signals an assured new direction for Glaspy. She’s a fierce believer in the power of specifics to tell universal truths, to capture emotions we’ve all felt but don’t necessarily hear reflected in pop music. Some truths are uglier than others, but Glaspy never backs down.

Emotions and Math has received widespread acclaim, with NME calling her “pure American muscle. Guitars snarl and spit, stares are deep and wise…”.

“Emotions and Math is strutting yet off-kilter, neatly capturing its lyrical themes of wide-eyed longing … Low-end-heavy indie rock with disarmingly honest lyrics.” – Rolling Stone

"'Emotions and Math' treats bad decisions and destructive impulses with compassionate clarity and heartfelt empathy." – Pitchfork

“The music is unadorned, the better to showcase Glaspy’s electric guitar and her extraordinary voice, as well as her plainspoken lyrics, which are, by turns, gently sentimental and firmly not.” – The New Yorker

Last October at CMJ in New York, Glaspy opened for Thunderbitch (Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes) and completely floored everyone in the room. WNYC, America’s most listened-to public radio station, said Margaret “has a knack for sending shivers down any spine”.

Making her debut television performance on Late Night with Conan O’Brien in July last year and following it up with a captivating performance for NPR Music’s Tiny Desk series, Glaspy is on the up and up. She won’t be playing small venues for long, so make sure you catch this indie star-in-the-making up close and personal, while you can!
